I’ve written about color theory before, and this week, I’m seeing blue.

And apparently, so was everyone else.
What is so appealing about blue is how ubiquitous it is, how we effortlessly style it into our everyday casual outfits. It is in the light-wash jeans in our closets that are so well loved (the more uncomfortable they are, the better), the powder blue eyeshadows, and of course, our totes.
When I saw Viv the Mole’s reel about the beautiful cobalt blue Mubi tote, I had to get one for myself (this one by Pacific Tote Company is also a similar, if not exact, blue).

Blue goes with everything; orange, red, yellow, green, brown, even black. It is a versatile color. And its varying shades (from baby to a deep midnight/navy hue) can elevate an outfit as a sleek office-chic ensemble or maintain a playful vibe when styled with an oversized knit and sexy tank. Whoever said the navy/black pairing was a faux pas was seriously disturbed.
It even looks good with coffee.

Here are a couple of my favorite blue outfits:
Outfit 1:
This beautiful Tricot cashmere knit in the color Nina really surprised me; it was so flattering and super soft. I have my eye on the Camel and Red. I styled the knit with a tomato wool bag from the Australian brand Affaires; the brownish red color really made the powder blue of the sweater pop. When it comes to socks, wearing these Yves pair from one of my favorite brands, Comme Si, is like tying a big bow to a boxed gift.
I think it’s fun pairing something structured (like a blazer) to a flowy or relaxed outfit. The “fun” part of styling came after the fact; I have so many blazers I haven’t been able to wear in recent months, so I had to figure out a way to make it work with my current lifestyle.
Outfit 2:
I am particular about denim; the more uncomfortable they are, the better. I don’t think they’re supposed to be comfortable. I don’t play favorites with my jeans, because I love them all. I think Madewell denim is excellent because not only are they size inclusive, but they have a recycling program where you can trade in your old jeans. On my recent trip to NYC I discovered Still Here NY, and that’s where I bought my denim skirt (Lima in Classic Blue).
The button down flannel was an unexpected purchase from Bode, one of my favorite boutiques in LA. Their upcycled, one of a kind pieces are so special and well, one of a kind. The sales associate who helped me curate the styles I was looking for encouraged me to get it, since once it sells, it’s gone for good. Needless to say, I’m so happy I bought it.

And because I like things that come in threes, this latest gift from my husband was what cemented my love for this color for Spring:
Outfit 3:

It is so nice to see linen sets (these are by Eileen Fisher) again.
Honorable mentions:
Something about a wide legged pant is timeless:

And this mohair sweater just gives “crisp, spring season with blue skies” and would look perfect with a high waisted trouser:

Recap:
Blue is easy (and fun) to style because we have so many pieces in this hue already in our wardrobes.
I style it by layering different colors (for my skin tone and color palette, a brown-red or light yellow look most flattering) because I can always remove one layer when I feel too warm.
A blue accessory (an earring, necklace, bag) or pop of color (nail polish, sock) helps make an outfit look more cohesive and intentional.
Blue is my all time favorite 💙
I look forward to this. by this meaning, the "color series" first yellow now blue.
I wore blue this weekend and was surprised at how well it complimented my skin color.
I agree with wide-leg jeans. They're currently my favorite. I need one in black and gray so I can be complete.
